Oven cleaner sprayed on vehicles ruins paint jobs

There has been a run on oven cleaner in Napa the past week. Unfortunately, the majority of the cleaner hasn’t seen the inside of an oven.

Instead, the spray has been used to damage vehicles all over town. Since June 17, police have taken 67 vandalism reports from Napa residents who said their vehicles have been doused with some type of acid.
“We believe the majority of the attacks have been vandals using oven cleaner spray,” Napa Police Sgt. Debbie Peecook said. “We have seen at least 80 cars that have vandalized.”

The vandals are targeting northwest Napa, hitting dozens and dozens of vehicles parked on the street and in driveways.
Brian Coutch, who lives in the 2400 block of Trower Avenue, got a quadruple dose of the vandals’ wrath.

Two of his vehicles parked in the street were damaged. Two others, including his company car, were hit sometime late Wednesday night and early Thursday morning.
“I never heard anything during the night. I got up at 6 a.m. (Thursday) to walk my dog and there it was. It looks as if who did this used paint thinner. The paint was literally bubbling off my truck. If you try to wash it off it, it goes down to the bare metal,” Coutch said. “I bet I have at least $15,000 in damages.”

Coutch said his neighbor was working on his Mercedes until around midnight. “They got him, too. There must have been at least 15 cars sloshed with the paint thinner on Trower,” he said. “I plan to put up a surveillance camera. The neighbors are talking about starting a Neighborhood Watch. We live in a nice part of Napa, and we need to take our neighborhood back.”

Ted Allen lives in the 4100 block of Maher Street, off Trower Avenue.

He got a double whammy, with two vehicles hit on two consecutive nights, Tuesday and Wednesday.

“Guess they figured they didn’t do a good enough job and came back a second time. It looks as if they used oven cleaner. It smells like oven cleaner and burns when you touch it,” Allen said. “The first night they got the tailgate of my pickup parked in the driveway. I backed the truck into the driveway and woke up this morning to find they had sprayed the hood.”

Allen said he counted at least 10 vehicles on his block that were hit.

“All the neighbors are talking about it. We’re all very upset. The first night it happened, I was mad, but thought ‘kids will be kids.’ But second time ... well, whoever is doing this is trying to do as much damage as possible. Everyone is going to have to have their cars repainted.”

Las Flores Drive resident Michael Williams discovered his Mustang and Taurus had been targeted on Wednesday night.

“It looks and smells like the oven cleaner you spray on. I got estimates for the damages today, and it’s going to cost me $2,400 for one car and $3,300 for the other,” Williams said. “We can’t let this keep happening. We need to form a Neighborhood Watch.”

Police have no suspects and no leads, Sgt. Peecook said.

“A couple of cars also have been keyed. We plan to have extra patrols in the neighborhoods that are being targeted,” she said. “We have been checking garbage cans to see if we can find out where they are ditching the oven cleaner cans, but we haven’t found anything so far. There is very little evidence we can collect. We respond to the calls, but the most we can do is take photos of the damage. We are really hoping someone will see something and call us.”

Peecook said, although the damage to the vehicles parked on the street is on the sidewalk side, they don’t know if the culprits are on foot, on a bicycle or in a vehicle.

The majority of the vandalism has happened on Trower Avenue, Maher Street, Flagstone Drive, Linda Vista Avenue, Linda Mesa Way, Fairfax Drive, Lloyd Drive, Las Flores Drive and Raleigh Street.

Anyone with information is asked to call Napa Police at 257-9223 or Sgt. Peecook at 257-9256.

" It is obvious, after this morning's very early walking of the dog that the people that KNOW about this chaos are protecting themselves. I traverse the same loop EVERY DAY,, M-F and know the patterns of the neighborhood. There were fewer cars parked ON the street! Driveways with normally one or two cars had 3 squished in where possible. Houses with cars in driveways were either suddenly gone or on vacation or my guess is, parked in the garage.

Loads of motion lights were working AND WAYYYYY more porch lights were on. I noticed more car alarm lights inside blinking too.

I think, had Napa been given a chance to protect themselves better, they would have. Sadly for many, it's too late. More than likely, the vandalism would have still happened but it would have been different targets.

On the flip side, the streets were eerily quiet and I didn't see ONE police vehicle and only perhaps about 6 cars total, out and about. On average, it is more like 15.

Perhaps they were all over watching the house fire on the other side of the highway. "

It's probably 2-4 teen ager boys, walking around with nothing to do. Guys, it's not fun, not mature, and pretty stupid. You've caused a lot of damage all over town. You need to "man up" and come forward and claim your deed, accept responsibility for the damage you've caused. "

I think we need permission to spray these kids with their own oven cleaner. "

I sure hope these vandals are caught. They are going to have a BIG bill on thier hands to reimburse everyone. And if their minors, I hope thier parents have insurance to cover all the damages. A stint in behind bars wouldn't be bad either for the people that did the damage. "

" I was told by the police dept that IF they can actually pin this on someone or several someones and they are under the age of 18, their parents will be responsible for the damage and the victims will be reimbursed. I hope the parents’ integrity is better than that of their kids.

I have to wonder, however, if it is likely the victims will see anything since, as these parents are not being responsible for their children, will they be responsible for their children’s damages? The apple does not fall far from the tree…

Insurance is a necessary evil but it’s sad when the insured has to use it and then suffer the consequences of the ripple effect in the way of higher premiums.

This whole matter has gotten so large that there is little doubt in my mind it will be solve

Oh and in closing ~ HOW ODD that the people who’s children are believed to be responsible are about the only vehicles on the street that were not in garages, that did not receive damages! Hmmm inquiring minds what to know…. "

It's been happening since, June 17..why are we just hearing about this?

Why is this happening? Could it be that teens have nothing to do? They get bored and everyone knows that when you're bored you find something to do.

My car was ransacked about a month ago, I felt horrible. So violated and disgusted; God only knows who was in my car.

I hope the vandals stay away from the Brown's Valley area. "

The second is that every house in that area has a 2 car garage and a driveway big enough for 2 cars but they park on the street anyway. People should park in their garages and get the cars off the street. They will be safer and the neighborhood will look better. "

Give me a break, these vandals are not going to be caught until someone beats the living daylights out of them and then the cops will show up and arrest both people. What about holding them at gunpoint until the cops show up? Stun gun? They should get something but a slap on the wrist. Obviously there parents don't care. "

I'm glad to see the NVR write about this problems, but there are a lot of other areas that were his prior to this incident. In the past three years, I believe Napa has had more cars vandalized than any other city in the Bay Area. I work in Santa Rosa and I have not read about this type of problem in that city. The police are only a reactive group so it would be only by chance that they are able to catch these punks in the act. However, I am sure that someone knows something and they should come forward. Since the Insurance companies are looking at a big bill, maybe they should offer a reward. The baseball bat comment sounds tempting but not practical...unless you feel the need to protect yourself when you approached these punks. "

"kids being kids" is toilet papering someone's house, dropping water balloons onto unknown people, etc. This is malicious, severe, and offensive. Whomever is doing this is purposely trying to punish those vehicle owners. And honestly, if these acts are being perpatrated by a "child" or "children" WHY ARE THEY ALLOWED TO ROAM THE STREETS WITH CANS OF OVEN CLEANER!!!? WHERE ARE THEIR PARENTS!?

I'm ashamed that the police department wasn't stepping up patrols ANYWAYS with the kids being out of school for summer! Why does it take unfortunate events, or unnecissary consequences for people to just DO THEIR JOBS?!

My heart goes out to those citizens who were affected. Not just once, but some MULTIPLE times! In today's economy, an event like this just might break some financially. It would be nice to see an auto dealership , repair shop, body shop, etc offer their services perhaps at a discounted rate to those effected, or to those without insurance, etc. "

" To Billy and Melimop: FYI, the police aren't as dumb as you think. They were out in full force last night. Just because you don't see them doesn't mean they aren't there. That is what "undercover" means. But they can only be in so many places at one time. Also, our property taxes pay a very minimal amount of police salaries. That money goes to the county, not the city. Hotel revenues are the main source of income for police salaries.

Now let's look at the staffing issues related to NPD. Why don't you ask the city council, and our illustrious mayor (who by the way voted against red light cameras so that should show her stance on crime prevention) why the staffing minimums for the police department have not changed since the early 80s. On any night after 1 am, there are 4 cops running the whole city. One domestic violence call can tie up 2 or 3 officers. Now you are down to 1 to 2 officers running the whole city.

To blame the police is asinine. Blame the parents of these vandals who did not instill good values in their children. I grew up in Napa, and coincidentally in the neighborhood where all these vandalisms are occurring, and I didn't have anything to do as a teenager either. But I never, EVER, damaged anyone's property. I learned "do unto others" and lived by it. Be good neighbors. Report anything unusual. Keep your eyes open. And YES, you can use what ever force is necessary to place someone under citizens arrest. "

Can't blame them, but it would have been nice to catch the individuals responsible for 'keying' my car. It looks like these kids have graduated from keys or rocks to oven cleaner and paint thinner.
The citizens are going to be the ones who catch these people. The NPD are too busy wathcing drunks at the bars.
All the new camera's in this town for red light violators is going to pay for itself. Haha---- it is going to take 15 years worth of citations to pay for the cameras.

I absolutely feel for the victims of this vandalism, and wish those who did this are caught and prosecuted. But, I also question some of you that think that because your car got some oven cleaner on it the police should drop everything and focus on this. Have you listened to a police scanner before? There are far worse things that the police need to be dealing with. Neighborhoods need to be more vigilant and watch out for each other. There is no way the police can be everywhere at the same time, but neighbors can. This is a good lesson to get out of your chair, go out side and meet your neighbors and form a neighborhood watch group. "

These are major felons in the making who will most likely graduate to more dangerous activities and eventually end up incarcerated, at taxpayers expense no less. Let's all keep an eye out for each other and our neighbors. Perhaps parents of children with histories of disruption and disciplinary problems in school might want to check their pantries to see if the oven cleaner has gone missing... "

If you are so vocal about hiring more officers, maybe you should take this before the city council. Trust me when I say, the police department has been begging for more officers. When a department works at minimums from the 1980s, one can only do so much. And this is in no way an excuse....it is a FACT. The police can only do so much with what they have.

And I will not make excuses for whoever is vandalizing. If I catch any of them vandalizing in my neighborhood, they will see what a real mother's justice looks like.

For those of you who are concerned about touching one of these little criminals to place them under arrest, case law states you can use "whatever force is reasonable and necessary." Let me know next time you call the police and see how it goes or if they even show up. I was just in on jury duty and talk about a waste of time an resources these sheriffs (three in one court room at a time) need to be on the street not in some court room chewing gum. You get off your high horse and help catch these vandals. I drove around on Saturday night and what did you do ???? "

" Wow. You risked your life by swimming in a pool ! That's almost the same as stopping a wanted and armed felon whose only route to freedom involves shooting the cop who just pulled you over.

Given the choice, I think I'd prefer the danger of a nice relaxing swim. You are a wise man. "

" This is all really urban terrorism and should be treated a such as it affects the social and emotional fabric of the city, it's citizens and businesses. Where I live in the East Bay this is tragically common and it's un uncommon for car windows to be shot out for one full mile and more, one car at a time. Worse when I first moved here the street people used to set the entire car on fire.

This does not take an entire army of people to pull off and I suspect that when they are caught you may find some very interesting things. BART was having a problem with it's seats being slashed daily years ago and after the suspect weres finally caught by surveillance it turned out that the slashers had been 'hired' by the same damn contractor who refinished such BART train seats in Oakland to drum up more business. So there are various possibilities here. If this were *painful* to do the persons doing it would not be doing such things. They also would *not* do this to their own vehicles would they? Do not confront such people caught in the act. Call the local PD aka 911 and get even a partial plate # and or vehicle description. Think HD CCTV cameras 24/7 for starters. "

" Billy: On Saturday night, I was driving around in my PATROL CAR responding to robbery, and fight calls in the city I work for. So I don't have to make excuses for the police. I know EXACTLY what they do on a nightly basis. Until you walk a block in our shoes, don't judge. "

" Sounds like with school out that this is whe the oven cleaner incident started. Parents should check their garbage cans to see if they find oven cleaner cans in their trash. If the parents do they should turn their kids into the police. You know the parents probably will not turn their kids into the police, but atlease they can try to stop their kids from doing further damage. Who knows maybe this is an adut who owns an auto painting store who needs buisness. With todays economy maybe someone is trying to make a few extra bucks. "

" southern peach. the population has grown since the 1980's, and, even given that major violent crime is down about 50% since then , car theft and vandalism are up . i think if you gave actual figures for budget and staffing in the 80's and compared to now, a lot of us would get involved in trying to get more staff. we all sympathize with the victims of vandalism as many of us have had it happen to us. you make a good case for understaffing being addressed. 4 police is way too few at any time of day. how do you feel about 6 officers being tied up in a 4 hour sweep that nets 99% innocent people while the paper announces to criminals when the police will be busy elswhere ? i have read the days and times when the d.u.i. (read," anything we can find") checkpoint will be, at least roughly, and have always wondered if the few people who read it and refrain from drinking and driving that day are outweighed by computer literate criminals who benefit by knowing when the police will be unable to patrol the area of intended crime. i really don't know what the balance is there. perhaps you have an idea. a ride-along is a good idea. at least that way people will realize that the police are just human beings doing what we tell them to , for instance, when we elect a sheriff. it was a revelation to hear that you are paid by mainly hotel tax. that is the advantage of this blog. we get a more in-depth picture of what is happening locally.i know i have mixed up city and county police here, but there is a total number on duty available to do what we ask "
