The island served the U.S. Navy for 142 years, and saw the launching of 513 ships including 17 nuclear powered submarines.
At one time nearly 10,000 Mare Island workers lived in Napa County.
Festivities will be in Building 46, the original Mare Island Pipe shop built in 1855. The structure now houses the Mare Island Historic Park Museum, which includes an exhibit of the Lennar Corporation plans for island development as a commercial and residential venture.
Doors open at 10:30 a.m. Food service is planned from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The day will include tours of the century-old admiral's quarters, historic chapel, cemetery and the SS Trans Quest. The chapel was the first Navy Chapel established on the west coast and still has original Tiffany stained glass windows. The Trans Quest was used to retrieve space capsules.
The last tour begins at 3:30 p.m.
Admission is $5 for Navy Yard Association members and $15 for the general public with advance purchase. A limited number of tickets will be sold at the door for $20. To order tickets, contact Mary Rutland at
